Mediacom Announces New High-Speed Internet Programs to Connect Low-Income Households

Mediacom Announces New High-Speed Internet Programs to Connect Low-Income Households

Mediacom Communications today announced its participation in the federal government’s Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), a new program designed to help more Americans lower the monthly cost of home internet service.

The ACP is administered by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Qualifying households can receive a credit of up to $30 off their monthly internet service bill Eligibility is defined by the FCC and targets households with income less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines or that participate in government programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, WIC, and Lifeline.

To maximize the ACP benefit, Mediacom has launched a new internet service called Connect2Compete-Plus (C2C+) with a $30 per month price including modem and unlimited data for qualifying households. The new C2C+ tier delivers internet download speeds of up to 50 Mbps and is one of many speed options available to customers who participate in the ACP.

“With more people than ever before working and studying from home due to the COVID pandemic, access to high-speed broadband is a necessity for most families,” said Ed Pardini, Mediacom’s senior vice president of field operations. “By participating in ACP and launching C2C+, we hope to provide more opportunities for low-income households to get and stay connected to the internet.”

Recent federal legislation created the ACP to replace the temporary Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) program. Mediacom enrolled more than 13,000 households in the EBB program during 2021. Existing EBB customers will continue to receive monthly benefits of up to $50 per month through March 1. Mediacom is working with its EBB customers to transition them into the ACP.

The ACP benefit is available to both new and existing Mediacom customers who qualify.  Households interested in participating in the ACP must confirm eligibility through the Affordable Connectivity Website and can then enroll in the program. INDIANAPOLIS — Comcast is closing the digital divide in Indiana by adding expanding eligibility of a key program to veterans. Internet Essentials is an initiative Comcast created to provide low-cost internet to those in need. Low-income veterans now qualify to receive this program. The move to extend Internet Essentials eligibility to low-income veterans is the second largest expansion in the program’s history.

“We’ve made great strides in helping Hoosier families bridge the digital divide that can restrict advancement in career and education,” said Matt Kelley, Government Affairs senior manager for Comcast in Indiana. “It’s so meaningful to extend that same opportunity to Indiana’s low-income veterans.”

According to 2016 U.S. Census data, more than 30 percent of low-income veterans do not have internet access and Comcast’s Internet Essentials program is wanting to change that.

“Indiana has made a commitment to supporting veterans in many different ways,” said Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch. “Comcast is taking a leading role in workforce development by making sure that veterans in need have the Internet access they deserve.”

Internet Adoption Programs Are Setting People Up for Success

As we learned earlier this month, the release of Comcast’s seven-year progress report of the Internet Essentials program indicated that internet adoption programs have reached more than six million Americans. But Internet Essentials—the largest broadband adoption program in the U.S.—is doing more than just expanding internet-connected households across the country. It’s helping to improve the lives of low-income families and individuals in almost every way possible.

While discount incentives and initiatives for low-income Americans are making an internet connection inside the home more accessible than ever before, free digital literacy classes and training offered through these programs are giving people the opportunity to learn how to make the most of their internet experience. These opportunities include applying for and landing a job, completing a homework assignment, connecting with family and peers, receiving current news, streaming shows, and filling out medical or government assistance forms—all of which would not be possible without connectivity or the skills necessary to navigate the internet.

Comcast’s $550 million investment in digital literacy training and awareness over the past seven years is definitely paying off as participants report upward mobility in various areas of their lives. Since 2011, the Internet Essentials program has hosted more than 2 million people in its online learning centers where users can access a wide range of training videos, guides and reports on accessing the internet, online safety, and media literacy.
U.S. broadband providers are committed to not only bringing an internet connection and the equipment necessary to homes and communities that lack connectivity, but also to empowering all Americans with the knowledge and resources they need to overcome the obstacles they are challenged with everyday—obstacles that are preventing them from leading their best lives and competing in the global marketplace. Every year, these barriers continue to be broken as more families are connected to the internet and gain access to the resources and tools that will help them thrive in their home, in the workplace, in school, in the economy, and in their personal lives.

See the chart below to learn how internet adoption programs are impacting families.
